Current Issue: Mobile PC Magazine

Where’s my WiMax?
1:30 PM - Wednesday, January 19 2005 ~InformationWeek
Are you sick of huddling around in the dim ethereal aura of a Wi-Fi hotspot? With WiMax (802.16), you could range far and wide and still be able to connect to the web from your notebook. With a network of WiMax towers in place, you could log on from anywhere a cell phone could pull down a signal. Unfortunately, this future technology just got more futuristic (well, further in the future, anyway). According to Dean Chang of Aperto Networks (a wireless broadband equipment vendor) the availability of certified WiMax equipment will be delayed for at least six months. As it was due to be delivered in the first half of 2005, the new delay means that it'll be at least a year before fully certified WiMax equipment will be available. Now you'll have to mark it on your 2006 calendar.

Scarlett Johansson

by Chris Jones | Feb 01 '05
Esquire
Right about now, Scarlett Johansson is supposed to be surveying the history of dildos with me. This fantastical happenstance was meant to take place at Hollywood's Erotic Museum, which, because she's a girl of appetites, she's long wanted to visit. But the only person who'd ever offered to go with her—till today, at least—was her dad, and that would have been creepy. So, thinking myself chivalrous and only marginally creepy, I'd extended an invitation, she'd accepted, and I was looking forward to accompanying her there very much. Just the idea of looking at sexual artifacts with Scarlett would take the ......

Is there a need to submit your blog to the major search engines?

That question is constantly being asked on the various internet forums, whether blog related or not.

The most important search engines include Google, Yahoo, MSN Search, AOL Search, WiseNut, and Teoma. Other search engines like AltaVista and Inktomi are now the property of the major search engines.

There is a misconception all over the internet, and certainly not restricted to the blogging community by any any means.

People keep thinking that a blog or a traditional website, has to be somehow submitted to the search engines, if you want to be included in their search listings.

That is not true. more...

Why Blogs Rank High In Search Engines

By: Fredrik Wacka

To me blogs are a strategic business communication tool. I usually consider the fact that blogs rank high in search engines to be a positive side effect. But I also recognize that for some people search engine optimization, SEO, is a major reason for blogging - and I have found it to be a good reason for others to start thinking about blogging at all. Here's a list of explanations to why your blog probably will rank high in search engines. And it's more to it than just the links.

Blogs are continuing to become a standard for Internet users. Readership continues to climb. However, what causes them to rank well in search engines? Discuss at WebProWorld.

The links are important, though. Especially to Google. Yahoo and the MSN Beta seems to give content related factors more weight in my experience. But even with Google the key to your success doesn't lie in links alone. If you want traffic through search engines you must get the basics right too.

So, here's my take on why blogs rank high in search engines.

Keywords, key phrases
Straight to the point
Each post's page structure
Coding
One subject per post
The blog site's information structure
Links then...?

Keywords, key phrases

If I wanted to pick one single reason I would actually choose this one: In a blog you talk. You engage in conversations. You think out loud, in a way. The things you say are (hopefully) everything but the standard corporate bullxxxx. This means you are filling the engines' databases with relevant keywords - relevant because most of us search for the words or phrases we use daily. The same words you use in the blog because you talk instead of sending messages to the target audience.

Straight to the point

How many blog posts have you seen with this kind of headline: "Our software system solution for world-wide data quality"? How many corporate sites have you seen...? This point is related to the first one but it adds one extra dimension. Not only do we in blogs speak like real, living people in the words we use - we say it directly. Straight to the point. There are certainly exceptions to this, I admit that. But generally speaking I have found it to be true in many business blogs. To say what you want to say as fast as possible is important, which leads me to my next reason.

Each post's page structure
It's more or less standard in blog design to use the post's title/headline as the page's title (together with the blog name). With my two previous reasons in mind you now see how the html title is filled with tasty keywords. And that's the most important place to have them. That's where search engines expect to find the best clue to what your page is about, and they rank the words there high in comparison to other positions in the code. Speaking about code...

Coding
If you use blog templates they will probably be an example of good coding. Most I've seen has been at least. It's often a table-less design, an extensive use of style sheets, correct coding where headlines not only are larger and bold but actual H1's, H2's and so on. It's a clean code - good for browser compability, good for visitors with disabilities. Good for search engine spiders. Here you have a potential risk. If you just use the old CMS templates for your regular site, you may loose this advantage. The solution is of course to redesign all of it in line with this "modern" web design.

Finally, some reasons relating to information structure.

One subject per post
This is all about keyword density, which is the ratio of the word someone searches for against the total numbers of words on the web page. Most blog posts are rather short, and they're often about one subject. That means a good chance of a high keyword density - especially if you compare it to a standard corporate web site where you try to tell about all your products on one page, or very few pages.

The blog site's information structure
Blogs are "flat" sites. They have a first page (level 1), current posts (level 2), about page (level 2), archive pages (level 2) and archived posts (level 3). That's it. It's not clear exactly how important this is. Some claim spiders don't regularly index very deep sites and that low-level pages are given lower ranking, others say this is not a factor to care about.

Links then? Well, they will do you good too. A high Google PageRank is obviously better than a low. But if you don't get the above things right, the PageRank won't mean as much to you as it otherwise would have.

Blogs Big in 2004

Last year saw a big increase in weblog usage, according to information released by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. In November, two surveys by Pew revealed 8 million Americans have created blogs, and that blog readership jumped 58% in 2004. However, even though 27% of Internet users read blogs, another 62% still don't know what they are.

W Magazine Cover Story

Julia Roberts' mother is calling, and Roberts isn't picking up the phone.

She stares at it while it rings once, twice, five times, before reluctantly deciding not to answer.

"Now it'll probably ring about 25 more times," says Roberts, too polite to interrupt the interview she's in the midst of. "It's sweet that she's so determined."

Her mother, a realtor based in Smyrna, Georgia, isn't the only one trying in vain to get at Julia Roberts these days. Since last May, when the news broke that the world's highest-paid actress was pregnant with twins, her expanding belly has gotten so much press attention that you'd think she was hiding Osama bin Laden in there. Roberts, as usual, has been mum about the details—which is why it's rather astounding that this interview is not taking place in the generic confines of a publicist's office or a hotel suite, but in a hospital room in Los Angeles, where Roberts is lying flat on her back, dressed in sweatpants and a white T-shirt. After experiencing contractions several weeks before her due date, Roberts rushed here with her husband, Danny Moder, from their home near the beach. The doctors placed her on temporary bed rest, and so for now she's forgoing Pilates classes in favor of endless rounds of Scrabble.

"Being Juila" by Christopher Bagley has been edited for Style.com. The complete article appears in the January 2005 issue of W.

Where you've seen her:
She cut her Hollywood teeth playing Isabella, the unhinged Latin spitfire on The Young and the Restless and recently starred on ABC's crime drama L.A. Dragnet. WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE -O, The Oprah Magazine

THIS MONTH'S MISSION

Be inspired. Transform your mind, your mood and your body! The January mission calendar.

WHAT I KNOW FOR SURE

I feel so blessed that another year is upon us and I'm still here, and, as the old folks in my church used to say, "clothed in my right mind."

My prayer for myself, my friends and the world is that we become ever more conscious—aware of our meaning and purpose. I pray for peaceful pauses within ourselves to acknowledge our gratitude for life and all its complexities. I say thank you right now for all the lessons I will receive in 2005, and for the grace I'll be granted to handle them.

I marvel that at this age I still feel myself expanding, reaching out and beyond the boundaries of self to become more enlightened. In my 20s, I thought there was some magical adult age I'd reach (35, maybe) and my "adultness" would be complete. Funny how that number kept changing over the years, how even at 40, labeled by society as middle-aged, I still felt I wasn't the adult I knew I could be. Now that my life experiences have transcended every dream or expectation I ever imagined, I know for sure that we have to keep transforming ourselves to become who we ought to be.

For the first six years of my life, I was raised by my grandmother. She was not an educated woman, but she knew the Bible as well as she knew her kitchen—and she could surely cook. She taught me Bible stories and had me memorizing verses from the age of 3. One of my favorites was "Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind." I believe that when you stop renewing, and are no longer open to change and the possibilities that continually unfold, you stop being alive and are just getting through the years.

Transformation doesn't happen unless you're willing: It's your choice.

This year I'm choosing to live beyond my wildest dreams. I wonder where they'll take me.
